Polio
November was proclaimed Polio Survivors Month in 2004. Coincidentally, 2004 marked the 50th anniversary of the successful testing of the vaccine that eradicated polio in the United States. Here at the Center for Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Dr. Daniel Ryan heads up our Post Polio Clinic and wants to increase awareness of polio, post polio and its effects.
Post-Polio Sequelae (PPS, also referred to as Post Polio Syndrome) and Late Effects of Polio are unexpected as are the other disabling symptoms that occur in 75 percent of paralytic and 40 percent of non-paralytic survivors approximately 35 years after the poliovirus attack. Unfortunately, those who were stricken with polio before vaccines were developed have not received the proper help they need.
The symptoms one can experience can include overwhelming fatigue, muscle weakness, muscle and joint pain, sleep disorders, heightened sensitivity to anesthesia, cold intolerance and difficulty swallowing and breathing.
