Prolotherapy -- An Alternative Treatment to Surgery

At the Center for Physical Medicine, Dr. Krasnick has a treatment option that eliminates chronic pain without surgery known as prolotherapy.

Prolotherapy consists of injections that ultimately relieve the pain associated with soft tissue injury.  The injections are administered in multiple sessions, causing the body to tap into its own healing ability.  Prolotherapy can be used on any soft tissues, including ligaments, tendons and joint capsules, also known as connective tissue because it supports the skeleton by connecting to bone.  Prolotherapy causes these connections to be rebuilt and strengthened.  In many cases, ligaments and tendons do not heal completely after an injury due to limited blood supply, and Prolotherapy can help!

How does it work?

The therapy involves injecting a natural solution into the soft tissue to act as a stimulus, causing a localized inflammation that increases the blood supply and flow of nutrients to the injured area.  The body's natural response to heal the cells causes the growth of new tissue that strengthens the weak area.  With use of a local anesthetic, the injections cause only minor discomfort.  Prolotherapy covers a wide array of conditions (including arthritis, back/neck pain, fibromyalgia, tendonitis, and sport injuries (such as rotator cuff tears) and produces remarkable results.

While many of us take anti-inflammatory drugs (such as aspirin, ibuprofen or cortisone) for joint or back pain, these medications only provide temporary relief and block our body's natural chemicals that help repair the injury.  Prolotherapy can stop the endless cycle of taking more drugs due to more pain.  Through the controlled injections, Prolotherapy achieves healing and pain relief rather than just blocking the pain sensation.

Dr. Krasnick has been professionally trained in Prolotherapy.  He is board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation that will insure a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
